hi there!

My name is Emma Rixmann and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who offers remote-based clinical supervision to all levels of social workers throughout Virginia seeking licensure.

Thank you so much for considering me to guide you through the clinical supervision process, and I look forward to getting to know you! I hope this site proves helpful in getting to know a little bit about me, my business, and navigating the steps to achieving clinical social work licensure in Virginia.

A little bit of (healthy) self-disclosure. . . .

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than ten years of experience engaging a variety of populations in the social work field. After working primarily in the medical field with patients and families managing chronic or terminal illnesses, grief, and loss, I transitioned to outpatient psychotherapy in the private practice setting in 2018. I quickly found that I enjoyed the clinical diversity private practice gave me, with the ability to work with kids and teens, individuals, families and couples who presented with a wide variety of diagnoses.

With a background in public service and direct patient care as a first responder, I have a Bachelor’s in Social Work and Emergency Health Services from UMBC in Baltimore, Maryland. I also have a Master’s in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia where I participated in their Advanced Standing Program with a clinical concentration. I have extensive experience in pain management, hospice and palliative care, complex disease management, and end-of-life planning. I specifically enjoy working with young adults managing chronic illness, invisible illness, pain, disability or even end-of-life journey. I have also worked professionally in the field of public health research in the topics of: parenting, maternal and pediatric nutrition, toddler overweight prevention, physical activity and substance use. I have future goals of obtaining a certification in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and working to further my experience in providing speaking engagements and training events.

I started providing remote-based clinical supervision to master’s level social workers in the private practice setting in 2020. I subsequently formed OBBH in 2021 when I was elected to participate in the inaugural group of Co.Starters, a local business start-up program through Longwood Small Business Development Center. My goals in establishing OBBH were to help expose other social workers to the importance of an approachable yet growth-based supervisory experience and offer the flexibility of a remote-platform to social workers throughout Virginia looking to advance their careers, an option I wish I had as a rurally-based supervisee.

In my client and supervisory practice I most enjoy utilizing Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Gottman Therapy. I hold a number of certifications including in the above mentioned TF-CBT and Gottman, as well as in Individual and Group Critical Incident Stress Debriefing. In 2023, I also became a Certified Financial Social Worker (CFSW).

I consider myself to be a culturally-competent provider, am LGTBQIA+ affirming, and encourage evidence-based utilization in every day practice. I tend to be solution-focused in nature, employ psycho-education and was trained in a highly medical model of social work.

When not “social working”, I can be found on my farm in Amelia County training rescue horses, playing with my pitbulls, knitting, gardening, reading memoirs, attending Richmond festivals or cooking. When not on the farm, I love to travel with family.
